Architecture 2005-08-03T13:04:11Z 2005-08-03T13:04:11Z 2005-03-11 http://hdl.handle.net/1903/2309 In the early 1900's, 14th Street in Washington, D.C. was a prominent commercial corridor and the site of numerous automobile showrooms. The riots following Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination in 1968 left many damaged buildings and vacant lots along the corridor. This project will seek to revitalize the area. Retail and mixed uses catering to the artist and appealing to the general public will be implemented on the 1500 block of 14th Street. An art center located within the block will incorporate affordable, flexible units with spaces for artists to live and work. Galleries and cafes along the ground floor of the building will reach out to the community as a whole. An artists' community will help redefine 14th Street as a 'place.'
