McKeldin Library Map Collection: an interactive story The Map Collection located on the fourth floor of the McKeldin Library at the University of Maryland Libraries holds over 350,000 print maps and hundreds of atlases, the majority of maps that were published by U.S. government agencies and came to the libraries through the Federal Depository Library program. The collection includes USGS Topographic maps, Soil maps, CIA, Aeronautical maps, Forest Service maps, Historical maps, and National Geographic maps, among others. Coverage includes all U.S. states, most of the U.S. territories and possessions, and some areas outside of the United States. The library's GIS and Data Service Center pioneered an effort to build a story-telling application using ArcGIS StoryMaps that will promote the print map collection and atlases in an interactive manner making the collections more visible to the campus community and beyond. As far as we know, it is one of a kind storytelling application ever built in HigherEd libraries to showcase the diversity of print map collections in an immersive fashion to experience the collection under the patron’s fingertips. Streets, roads and railroads, political and administrative boundaries, transmission lines, buildings, dams, parks, airports, mines, and levees may all appear on topographic maps. These are useful for a wide range of applications, including land use planning, agriculture, engineering, development, conservation, recreation, and historical research. Current Holdings The topographic maps are filed by scale, then alphabetically by state or territory name, then by map/quadrangle name.  An index to find quadrangle names is on the top of the cases, or you can use the USGS Store to find a quadrangle name (as well as a scanned GeoPDF). The McKeldin library currently has a collection of maps of the US States and some other places in the world. Some international maps can be found in the Foreign Map collection. Topographic maps may be found in some cabinets or drawers on the fourth floor of the library. The cabinets have information on the type of map, regions, state, scale, and map content which can be found in a specific cabinet number. US Topographic Maps are in Cabinet 1 through Cabinet 21. Maps from this section include maps from all states in the US which are categorized by alphabetical order from A - Z. These maps also come in different scales such as 1:24,000 1:50,000 1:100,000 1:250,000 and many more. Maps in this collection depict a wide range of thematic material, including topography, roads, soil, geology, climate, transportation, minerals, oil & gas, bathymetry, and satellite imagery. Large-scale city plans also exist for hundreds of foreign cities. This is because they provide both descriptive and interpretive information about the landscape's physical properties. Geologic maps are critical to a wide variety of applications, including property valuation, environmental consulting and clean-up, hazard prevention, exploration and development, civil engineering, city and regional planning (e.g., landfill siting, transportation planning, managing water and sewer systems), and locating natural resources. Current Holdings The primary sources of geologic maps are state geological surveys and the U.S. Geological Survey, which has published thousands of maps and reports related to geology, hydrology, minerals, coal, oil & gas, and land use--dating back to the late 1800s. Most of these items were published by non-governmental organizations (AAA, local tourism boards), corporate entities (Michelin, Shell Oil), or state/local governments; they are not U.S. government publications. These maps are not collected systematically, and many are not current. They are best used as a source of historical geography, particularly for users interested in large- and very large-scale depictions of domestic and foreign cities. Our holdings include more than 1,600 items dating from 1967 to the present. The Maryland Collection also houses an extensive collection of Sanborn Fire Insurance maps, including both the original and microfilm copies. These highly detailed maps, published between 1870 to 1950, show every structure in the central portion of many cities and towns throughout the state. A small collection of land ownership maps of Maryland is also available for researchers in the Maryland Room.   Maps from the Maryland Collection are only available for use in the Maryland Room, on the first floor of Hornbake Library.    Maryland Maps at McKeldin In McKeldin Library's map collection, you will find USGS topographic maps of Maryland and the surrounding region, as well as soil maps.  You will also find the Congressional Serial Set maps, which include maps of Maryland and the region and are searchable and downloadable through the Congressional (Proquest) database. Scales vary from 1:2,500,000 (Alaska) to 1:500,000. UMD State Maps Inventory Bureau of Land Management Maps These 1:100,000-scale maps, published by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), are cadastral survey maps of public lands in 13 western states (Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming). There are two series: Surface Management maps depict land ownership information by state and federal agencies (e.g., U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife, BLM, National Park Service).  Surface and Mineral Management maps depict land ownership information by state and federal agencies, and the location and nature of federally owned mineral rights. Both series portray basic geographic, topographic and roadway information, as well as township, range and section boundaries. Maps are updated regularly to accommodate changes in surface ownership, and older editions are retained for historical purposes. BLM maps are shelved in map cases by state, then by series, then alphabetically by map/quadrangle name.
